We have below bronze, silver and gold tutorials for our Higher Maths Trigonometry topic. Typically as you work through the modules, the difficulty of the skills increase by one step ensuring smooth progression. Simply click on the video to play it and pause it at the relevant points for you to attempt the questions. Each tutorial has a corresponding worksheet for you to download if additional practice is required. Make sure you have a pen and paper handy! Be sure to mark your work for every exercise attempted and record your score and time taken in your recording grid.
Essential prior knowledge:-
4th Level Maths; MTH 416a
National 5 Maths; REL 1.5a, REL 1.5b
Contents:-
10.1 - Trigonometric formulae
10.2 - Solving trig equations
10.3 - Trig identities
In the bronze section we learn about the double angle expansion for sin2x. At silver level we learn the expansions for cos2x and learn how to use them to solve related problems.
At gold level we discover the expansions for sin(a + b) and cos(a + b) and how to use them to find exact values of expressions. Prior knowledge of SOH CAH TOA and Pythagoras' Theorem are essential for this module!
Video 100: Outcome 1 - The double angle formula for sin2x. Grab a pen and your Rigour jotter. Make sure you try all the questions!
Video 101: Outcome 2 - The double angle formulae for cos2x. Remember to copy down the worked examples and take notes. These will help you revise and remember!
Video 102: Outcome 3 - Addition formulae for sine and cosine. This is the final video in this module. After completing the questions why don't you try the past paper questions on this section at the bottom of the page?
At bronze level we learn how to solve "type 1" trig equations with only 1 trig term. We then move onto our silver video introducing "type 2" equations with more than one trig term and sin2x.
At gold level we show you how to solve "type 3" trig equations with more than 1 trig term and cos2x.
Video 103: Outcome 1 - Solving "type 1" trig equations. Grab a pen and your Rigour jotter. Make sure you try all the questions!
Video 104: Outcome 2 - Solving "type 2" trig equations. Remember to copy down the worked examples and take notes. These will help you revise and remember!
Video 105: Outcome 3 - Solving "type 3" trig equations. This is the final video in this module. After completing the questions why don't you try the past paper questions on this section at the bottom of the page?
At bronze level we learn how to solve trig identities involving sin2x. We then move on to silver level where we discover how to solve trig identities involving cos2x.
At gold level we learn how to prove trig identities with more than 1 trig identity. You will need to remember your National 5 ones for this video!
Video 106: Outcome 1 - Trig identities involving sin2x. Grab a pen and your Rigour jotter. Make sure you try all the questions!
Video 107: Outcome 2 - Trig identities involving cos2x. Remember to copy down the worked examples and take notes. These will help you revise and remember!
Video 108: Outcome 3 - Trig identities with more than one identity. This is the final video in this module. After completing the questions why don't you try the past paper questions on this section at the bottom of the page?
We have below a selection of Multiple Choice Exam questions. Although the exam is not in this format any more these questions provide an excellent opportunity to quickly test you on your knowledge of the topic before you try the longer questions in the section after this. To try the questions, just click on the links below.
12.1 - Trigonometric Formulae
12.2 - Solving Trig Equations
You will find below a collection of Trigonometry SQA past paper questions. You should click on a question, pause the video when instructed and give the question your best shot. Then un-pause the video and watch the worked solution. If the question is from paper 1 you should NOT use a calculator. You should make this section a regular place to come back to when revising. Even if you get the correct answer, it is recommended that you try all these questions more than once at various stages throughout the year.
