Measurement

MNU 311a

To run the tutorials simply click on the video you wish to play remembering to pause the video when attempting the questions! You should work through the exercises and homework in a squared jotter to keep all your work together. You should mark every section as soon as you finish it and write down your score.

For certain areas you will need a scientific calculator like the casio fx-85GT PLUS.

Once you have practiced the skills, be sure to see if you can apply them in the Applications questions at the bottom of the page. These questions should be revisited every so often as it is important to revise previous work so you don't forget it. Good luck! :)

Bronze Level

You should be familiar with calculating area by counting squares and calculating volume by counting cubes from 2nd Level Numeracy. In our bronze tutorial, we look at changing between units of length and volume and we learn formulae for calculating the area of a square/rectangle and the volume of a cube/cuboid...

VIDEO 105: Outcome 1 - Millimetres --> centimetres --> metres. Grab a pen and your Rigour jotter. Make sure you try all the questions!

Video 106: Outcome 2 - The area of a square and a rectangle. Remember to copy down the worked examples and take notes. These will help you revise and remember!

Video 107: Outcome 3 - Cubic Centimetres --> Millilitres --> Litres. Try this video and these practise questions.

Video 108: Outcome 4 - The volume of a cube and a cuboid. The final video in this module. After this, remember to think about your next steps!

Bronze Level self-marking quiz

If you feel you have mastered these skills why not try this short quiz under exam conditions? You will be provided with instant feedback so be sure to view it. Remember to re-do any video lessons (or use the worksheet) for any questions you answered incorrectly. Once you have completed the quiz, record the score in your profile and move onto silver level!

If you are confident about the skills at this level, now it's time to progress onto silver level.

Silver Level

At silver level we focus on triangles and trianglar prisms. Also, our number work for outcomes 1 and 3 becomes a bit trickier...

VIDEO 109: Outcome 1 - Millimetres --> centimetres --> metres. Grab a pen and your Rigour jotter. Make sure you try all the questions!

Video 110: Outcome 2 - The area of a triangle. Remember to copy down the worked examples and take notes. These will help you revise and remember!

Video 111: Outcome 3 - Cubic Centimetres --> Millilitres --> Litres. Try this video and these practise questions.

Video 112: Outcome 4 - The volume of a triangular prism. The final video in this module. After this, remember to think about your next steps!

Silver Level self-marking quiz

If you feel you have mastered these skills why not try this short quiz under exam conditions? You will be provided with instant feedback so be sure to view it. Remember to re-do any video lessons (or use the worksheet) for any questions you answered incorrectly. Once you have completed the quiz, record the score in your profile and move onto gold level!

If you're feeling confident, why not go for gold now???

Gold Level

At gold level, we learn how to calculate the lengths of missing sides when given the area or the volume. You may want to revise powers & roots in 3rd Level Maths beforehand although this is not essential.

VIDEO 113: Outcome 1 - Millimetres --> centimetres --> metres. Grab a pen and your Rigour jotter. Make sure you try all the questions!

Video 114: Outcome 2 - Calculating missing sides when given the area. Remember to copy down the worked examples and take notes. These will help you revise and remember!

Video 115: Outcome 3 - Cubic Centimetres --> Millilitres --> Litres. Try this video and these practise questions.

Video 116: Outcome 4 - Calculating missing sides when given the volume. The final video in this module. After this, remember to think about your next steps!

After having a go at bronze, silver and gold level, you're now ready to apply the skills!

Applications!

Now that you’ve practiced the skills, let’s see if you can apply them! In this section you will find application questions on area and volume. They may be set in a context, they could be a puzzle to solve or you may have to use a number of skills to solve the problems.

There are 13 questions in total here and you can answer them in ANY order at ANY time you like. Any questions that you don't get correct should be noted down and tried again at a later date - that's how we improve!

Can you answer them all correctly???

Question 1 - Ever kicked a football in the back garden and instantly regretted your decision??? Work out the true cost of that missed penalty with this question!

Question 2 - Practice how to calculate the area of a table top where the units are inconsistent.

Question 3 - A nice real-life numeracy problem to solve which hopefully won't leave you feeling floored!

Question 4 - A nice problem to solve involving the area of squares and rectangles.

Question 5 - There's a lot in this question. Volume, inconsistent units and changing from millilitres into litres. It's all there!

Question 6 - Do you remember how to calculate the height of a cuboid when given the volume? Let's find out with this question! No calculator allowed.

Question 7 - Never swig from the bottle again as we learn how to share fresh orange juice equally from a carton. Calculators allowed!

Question 8 - What will happen first? You solving this problem or the empty tank filling with water???

Question 9 - How do you make ice cubes? By chopping them of a BIG chunk of ice of course! Try this question with no calculator.

Question 10 - Don't you just hate being told to tidy your room??? Learn how to put blocks in a box with this problem to solve!

Question 11 - This is a very good problem to solve! A cube, a cuboid, same volume, work out the height. This question has it all!

Question 12 - Sometimes companies change the packaging of their products. Can you solve this nice problem involving two shapes, working backwards and different units?

Question 13 - We all love Toblerone, even if it is getting smaller due to the rising cost of ingredients! Hopefully you'll love this question too...

Congratulations!

You have completed this module - well done! Remember to go back and redo any areas of weakness, that's how we improve. If you are happy with all areas, go back to the main menu and pick another topic to practice!
